ADA Digital Compliance Deadline Extended

The Department of Justice extended the federal deadline for states to meet compliance for accessible website and mobile digital content by one year to April 26th, 2027. You can learn more about the extension on the Federal Register.

ITS has been working closely with state agencies that have been preparing for the original compliance date of April 24, 2026.

In anticipation of this ruling, ITS took several steps to prepare:

  • Finalized the purchase of ADA compliance software to provide automated scanning of state-supported websites.
  • Provided agencies with a “health status” from those scans, with recommendations on next steps.
  • Provided statewide training for all state employees to learn more about this federal mandate as well as what it means to be digitally accessible.
  • Developed the Digital Accessibility Central Hub on ITS website for digital accessibility requirements, training, and tools that help ensure agencies digital content is accessible for all users. This includes:
    • 5 how-to guides
    • 4 training videos produced by ITS (coming soon)
    • Countless self-paced training courses
    • Accessibility testing report of findings template
    • Broken link checker, color contrast checker, and other tools
    • Compilation of helpful web guides, articles, and other resources
  • Partnered with the Division of Purchasing to provide Idaho agencies with new language to be included in all formal and informal solicitations and contracts during the procurement process where a deliverable includes a digital asset.

Visit the Digital Accessibility Hub to learn more about these resources.

Shared Responsibility

While ITS is providing software and will scan agency public facing websites, individual agencies and their web content teams have a responsibility to remediate or update their content to meet compliance standards.

If you have not submitted an agency work request to get in the queue for modernizing the back-end code that enables compliance, please do so sooner rather than later by submitting an Agency Work Request.

Where We Are Now

Idaho has demonstrated a proactive approach to these standards. As of May 2026:

  • Adoption: 77% of Idaho state agencies—representing 58 agencies are now utilizing automated accessibility testing tools to monitor and fulfill compliance requirements. This includes agencies supported by ITS modernization initiative and agencies outside of this scope, demonstrating ITS commitment to statewide partnership.
  • Scale: This coordinated effort currently encompasses 156 websites for the participating agencies under the Idaho.gov domain/subdomains and over 62,000 individual pages being actively scanned every five days.
  • Performance: These efforts have resulted in an impressive average accessibility score of 86.9%. Notably, Idaho has surpassed the government industry benchmark score of 85%, signaling a high level of consistent remediation efforts across various state agencies.
  • Training & Support: Since June 2025, ITS has facilitated 13 training sessions across the State to provide a clear overview of the updated accessibility requirements.
