Who Let the Sawzall Out?

A renovation project at the Idaho Veterans Home in Boise led to a major IT disruption when a contractor accidentally severed about 100 network cables in the east wing—the hub for internet service to the entire facility. The cut knocked both the east and west wings offline.

ITS was notified 45 minutes later and immediately mobilized. Network Engineer Brian Patch arrived onsite, confirmed the damage, and coordinated with Quality Communications to restore service. Within three hours, the team re-spliced fiber optic cables and brought internet back online.

To fully recover, ITS installed new patch panels and fiber distribution points, then reconnected ethernet cables. Additional engineers, including Trace Devoy, Todd Scott, and James Muse joined the effort, working late into the evening and returning over the next two days to restore all systems—including life-support equipment and security cameras.

In total, ITS staff dedicated roughly 100 manhours to the response. Their swift, coordinated actions ensured continuity of care for veterans and highlighted the team’s technical expertise and commitment to safeguarding critical infrastructure.
