Shoulder Surfing

Generic Adobe stock: woman shoulder surfing as man uses his phone

“Shoulder surfing” is a term used in cybersecurity to describe the act of someone spying on another person’s screen or keyboard to gain unauthorized access to sensitive information. This can happen in public places like cafes, airports, or even within an office environment. The attacker typically looks over the victim’s shoulder to observe passwords, PINs, or other confidential data being entered.

To prevent shoulder surfing, it’s important to be aware of your surroundings and take precautions such as using privacy screens on your devices, positioning your screen away from public view, being discreet when entering sensitive information, and locking devices when not in use.
