Traffic Management Partnership

During every phase of IT Modernization, ITS picks up a whole new set of adventures and challenges. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) has been a great partner through modernization, and one of the more complex challenges that came over with ITD was the implementation of vendor Parson’s iNET system (Intelligent Networks, Smart Mobility Platform).

The iNET platform integrates an assortment of highways systems intended to optimize traffic management and safety for travelers. The system includes Parson’s managed servers, storage, network, and firewall equipment, as well as supporting network circuits, connecting into a Software as a Service (SaaS) solution to support ITD’s many highway cameras and dynamic message signs statewide.

The $2.4 million project was in progress, and our Network, Firewall, EA, Sec Ops and SDM teams became immediately involved to ensure the project timelines would be met. To add to the challenge, key ITD staff were no longer there, meaning ITS had to start from scratch.

A significant issue ITS identified and addressed immediately was major bandwidth constraints. This created a barrier to iNET as well as increased network load resulting from the iNET system integration.

Our challenge was to bring all participating end-point devices (cameras, highway signs, third-party servers, network equipment, and security devices) across the existing ITD network and into the iNET network. This includes feeds into the state’s Communications Center in Meridian with a Disaster Recovery site hosted in ITD’s District 1 North Idaho region.

This meant our teams had to undertake network analysis, review designs, evaluate security requirements, upgrade existing circuits, add new circuits, support handover testing, and integrate a variety of systems onto the ITD network while ensuring minimal impact to ITD staff and their normal operations. After several months, and many staff hours, ITS ensured it was successful and delivered on time, meeting all project goals. The platform provides enhanced capabilities, accommodate future growth and greatly improve public safety.
